“The cross was constructed of untreated, unpainted two-by-fours. There was no text across the surface. No flowers. No reminders of the person who had died. Death made its presence known only by the molded wood. The figure rose, the black shroud it wore obscured its head, face, and the rest of its body. The black fabric dragged on the dry desert floor. A hand reached up and touched the center of the cross, but no flesh was there to feel, just bone.”
